Access Routes
There are three preferred routes for visitors to reach Sarapiquí:
Braulio Carrillo National Park, Route 32: With approximately 90 minutes of journey from San Jose, through the Braulio Carrillo Park. Those who travel along this route will have the opportunity to enjoy a landscape that ranges from majestic slopes covered in primary forest, in the mountainous area, to imposing river beds and attractive agricultural and cattle farms in the plains.
Vara Blanca Road, Route 126: Approximately 2 hours from San José, those who travel through this area, further north than the Braulio Carrillo route, must move from San José, the capital city, to the province of Heredia and from there take north, by Vara Blanca, a small town in the province of Alajuela, passing through the city of Barva.
Route through San Carlos: Being the longest of the three routes, the visitor must move to the city of Alajuela and take the Bernardo Soto highway to the city of Naranjo, or do it by what is known as the “old road” (carretera vieja). Once in Naranjo, take the road that leads to Ciudad Quesada, the head of the canton of San Carlos, in the proven of Alajuela. From Ciudad Quesada, follow the road that leads to Aguas Zarcas, then to Rio Cuarto and from there to San Miguel, to continue towards Puerto Viejo.
If you are located in the area of San Carlos, Fortuna, you can go to Sarapiquí, taking the new route 4, north Atlantic corridor, known as Vuelta Kooper, Bajos de Chilamate, which will be arriving at your destination in just 1,5 hours.
